To anyone paying close attention, though, it was a case of deja vu. Andrew McManus was born in Sydney in August - though some corporate documents record the month as January - and raised on the Gold Coast from the age of four. His father was a car dealer, and Andrew was one of six children in the family.

He was raised as a Catholic, played rugby he was good enough to make the seniors with Brothers in Queensland and Warringah in NSW , and developed a taste for gambling and making money that reportedly had him expelled from school for running an illicit book.

In his late teens, McManus got into pub management, and from there into managing Selina's, the band room at the Coogee Bay Hotel in Sydney. In , he became the manager of rock band Divinyls, a gig he held until In , there was a blip when McManus was declared bankrupt after action brought against him by electrical goods hire company Jands. Three weeks later the bankruptcy was annulled when he settled his outstanding debt. But bad luck was never far away.

Legend has it that the morning after one gig at which Divinyls shared the bill with one of the biggest acts in the country, McManus turned up with his arm in plaster. It was not, claims one music industry figure who knew him at the time, an uncommon occurrence. Through his lawyer, he tells The Saturday Age he has never been mugged.

In both cases his creditors got nothing, but he soldiered on. In business, they say, you're only as good as your name. And if that's true, Andrew McManus must be very good indeed, because his name is attached to so many of his companies that it can be almost impossible to tell where one ends and the next begins.
