How many primate species are critically endangered
With about left, this species is certain to appear on the next list of the 25 most endangered species. The report also includes the well-known and loved ring-tailed lemur, which was estimated to number several hundreds of thousands two decades ago, but could now be down to the very low thousands because of the illegal pet trade and the loss of their forest habitat in Madagascar.
Bristol Zoological Society, for example, works closely with other conservation organizations and zoos to increase our understanding of the ecology, behavior and conservation status of many highly threatened species and conserve them in the wild. The list of 25 most endangered species is the result of a meeting of numerous primatologists there, who work in the field and have first-hand knowledge of the plight of primates worldwide.

GWC preserves the diversity of life on Earth by protecting wildlands, conserving wildlife, and supporting local guardians. Bristol Zoo Gardens is home to three aye-ayes — a breeding pair and an elderly male called Noah.
Bristol Zoological Society has been working to protect lemurs in Madagascar since and is currently helping to build a new field station — the Ankarafa field station in the north-western Sahamalaza-Iles Radama National Park. The facility will provide a research base for conservationists and scientists who are working to help lemurs of which more than 90 per cent are threatened with extinction. As a result of that attention, the Vietnamese government put these species on their national postage stamps to raise awareness about these species.
We have also seen the strengthening of protected areas for some of these species, such as the golden-headed langur, which has led to an increasing population size. Engaging with them is our greatest opportunity to save wildlife.
Bristol Zoological Society is a conservation and education charity. It relies on the generous support of the public not only to fund its important work in the zoo, but also its vital conservation and research projects spanning five continents.

Ecotourism following prime-watching and primate life listing following the bird-watching model has also a great role in primate conservation since primates are very popular and the public gains awareness and knowledge of the animals and their conservation.
This is especially needed because ecotourism also profits the nearby communities engaging and making the primates more important for them. Primates are amazing animals and we must agree to take their protection as a inter-generational responsibility, remember to always support their conservation and avoid all type of business and policies that continues to endanger these animals. Estrada, A. Science Advances 3: e This lemur is found in the dry forests, spiny bush, montane forest, mangroves, rocky outcrops, and one rainforest in southern and south-western Madagascar, and in one humid forest in south-eastern Madagascar.
All 17 species of Red Colobus, including Temminck's Red Colobus Piliocolobus basius temminckii are threatened, making this Africa's most threatened genus of monkeys. Hunting for bushmeat — much of it illegal — and habitat loss continue to pose the most urgent threats to primates across the continent. Fewer than mature individuals were estimated to be alive at the end of This decline is being driven by a combination of increased mortality due to entanglement in fishing gear and vessel strikes, and a lower reproduction rate compared to previous years.
Photo: Marianna Hagbloom. Research has shown that the population declines are likely due to lowered reproduction rates. The reasons for this are not yet fully understood, but the expansion of monoculture plantations, industrial development, global warming and light pollution are being investigated as possible causes.
Demand for this fungus, which is highly valued in Traditional Chinese Medicine, has risen sharply since the s. Caterpillar Fungus, which only grows on the Tibetan Plateau, parasitises the larvae of ghost moths while they are buried underground. Of these, 32, are threatened with extinction. These findings really bring home the urgent need for an ambitious post biodiversity framework that drives effective conservation action.
Thirteen lemur species have been pushed to higher threat categories as a result of intensifying human pressures.
